The recent Hurricane Sandy disaster reminds us all that it is important to be prepared. As we mentioned in an earlier blog, having a list of three or more reputable contractors with years of experience in their field is critical in times like these. Don’t wait until you are you are in desperate need to start searching contractors.
After Hurricane Sandy hit, over 1,000 new internet domain sites with the words “relief” or “Sandy” were registered. Many of these sites posing as charitable institutions were nothing of the sort. If people will steal from organizations that provide assistance to those in need, they will certainly knock on your door and try to trick you out of your hard-earned money. Be aware and be prepared!
Scam artists and unqualified contractors travel from place to place knocking on doors. They apply for local phone numbers to make themselves look established. Vulnerable individuals are the most susceptible to these types of “companies” but anyone can fall prey to them. When damage is widespread and reputable roofing contractors, siding contractors, painters etc and are spread thin, the less than trustworthy start circling like a vultures. That is why it is critical to know who to call before you need to call.
The day to start looking for the right roofing contractor or siding contractor or other type of contractor is now. Do your research! Are they a member of the Better Business Bureau? What is their rating? Are they a member of Katy’s Check A Pro? Are they an Angie’s list member? Can they provide referrals and can you see their work? A local and established roofer should be able to supply you with as many referrals as you want. Can they provide you with proof of insurance from a reputable insurance company? (Proof of insurance should always come directly from the insurance company, not the contractor.)
In the event of a disaster, don’t make decisions too quickly. Your roofer may need to patch or tarp your roof until they can get to the final installation. This is not uncommon in areas hit by a hurricane or other catastrophic events. The most important things are to prevent further damage and to have the final job done professionally and to your satisfaction.
Think of others who might need this type of information. If you have elderly parents or inexperienced children (such as first time homeowners) who do not live near you, research area contractors and have those numbers ready if disaster should strike. In your own neighborhood, keep a watchful eye over neighbors and be ready to assist them in finding someone who will not cheat them or do a shoddy job.
